I have tested myself with the “Lucida Grande” font now but I cannot
find any problem with that font. It works for me in kmail (both from
KDE3 and from KDE4) and also in /usr/bin/qtconfig (Qt4) and
/usr/lib/qt3/bin/qtconfig (Qt3). Works both for the combined and
non-combined ô. I tried many sizes and hinting settings but I really
cannot reproduce any problem using that font. It works for me in
OpenOffice as well.
I see slight offsets of the ^ in some sizes, but never anything
near as bad as in your screenshot. In my tests, the offsets were
tolerable.
Francis Lamonde> Now that is weird. In oowriter, using LUCIDA GRANDE
Francis Lamonde> misrenders the ô. Using LUCIDA SANS does not
Francis Lamonde> misrender (1-2 pixel only). But while I see my
Francis Lamonde> misrendered and correctly rendered ô, if I zoom in
Francis Lamonde> from 100% to say 150 or 200% my oowriter document,
Francis Lamonde> even the LUCIDA GRANDE will show perfectly rendered!
Font rendering issues often disappear when the size is increased.
Rendering a font into a small size is difficult because one cannot
use many pixels. Imperfections which are due to the limited number
of available pixels go a way if the size is increased.
Francis Lamonde> And I get the same good results if I zoom out (say
Francis Lamonde> 100% to 75%). And, if I type the ô in any other zoom
Francis Lamonde> value BUT 100%, it works out fine! How interesting!
Francis Lamonde> Do you need screenshots of that?
This seems to be a font rendering issue. Such rendering glitches
often happen only at certain sizes.
But I cannot reproduce it with the copy of “Lucida Grande”
I am using for testing.
Francis Lamonde> For me using a different font that settles the issue
Francis Lamonde> is fine
I think it is best if you use LUCIDA SANS then if it solves
all your problems.
I really tried hard but I cannot find any problems with
“Lucida Grande” here. Maybe you have a different copy
of “Lucida Grande” then me?
