There is no firefox running, before I invoke it either by clicking in the menu
or typing firefox in a terminal. 

I can then start another terminal and do as you suggest, it makes the
messagebox go away, but it is displayed afresh when I start over.

Becoming root lets me start a firefox session without the message being
displayed.
While the root session lasts, I can then start a firefox-session as user.
