With kernel newer than 2.0 is ifconfig obsolete network configuration tool. But a lot of distribution (maybe all) have this tool still in their repository. In ifconfig manpage should be information about this ifconfig obsoletion. I am attaching patch which will add this information into manpage WARNING: Ifconfig is obsolete on system with Linux kernel newer than 2.0.
