It at least sets up the headers and url and issues a request. And except for
the 3rd party ftp transfers, there was no backwards-incompatible change in
libcurl since 7.15.5.

OK, I can reproduce it the way you describe. Does that prove that
libcurl works?
It at least sets up the headers and url and issues a request. And except for
