OK, good news finally: on the ACER laptop the latest factory kernel
2.6.24-8-default seems to fix the issue.
The kernel takes ages to boot up but otherwise seems to work fine, so hope is
near that this issue will finally find a solution! I will try it on the Sony
Vaio, too, which also has snd_intel8x0m in addition to snd_intel8x0.
