I have to correct myself:
The message DOES fit on screen if I really extend the window to it's maximal
width; it's just not very user friendly that way.
Plus just saving the new SaX2 settings and restarting X did change the screen.
(Does that mean the image I described before is intended that way? There was no
response at all to my killing the X server, no asking if I wanted to apply the
changes or something.)
I am now enjoying a 24bit color screen at 800x600 resolution. Trying to set it
back to 1024x768 fails.
