I did some further testing. Limiting the download speed to 400 KB/s was still
to high, the NAT-Router still froze. Limiting the download speed to 300 KB/s
allowed me to successfully download the openSUSE 11.0 Alpha2 iso without any
lockups of the NAT-Router. Therefore I suspect one of the network card drivers
to be the reason for the lockups.
My IBM ThinkPad T23 which plays the NAT-Router role has two network cards. A
build-in '82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller' using the
'e100' driver module which is setup as eth0 and a '3Com Megahertz 3CCFEM556'
pcmcia network card using the '3c574_cs' driver module which is setup as eth1.
My network setup is the following:
* eth0 (e100) is the interface for the internal network
* eth1 (3c574_cs) is the interface for the VDSL2 50Mbit T-Home connection,
which is connected to the VDSL2 modem and is used by the vlan7 interface, which
in turn is used by the dsl0 interface
Because I suspected to be one of the two drivers (e100 or 3c574_cs) to be the
reason for the kernel lockups, I switched my configuration so that eth1
(3c574_cs) is the device for the internal network and eth0 (e100) is the device
which is connected to the VDSL2 modem. Next I started an unlimited download of
openSUSE 11.0 Alpha2 via KTorrent on one of my machines behind the NAT-Router.
The result was, that I could successfully download the 3,5GB iso file with an
average download speed of 800 KB/s without any lockups of my NAT-Router (the
ThinkPad T23 which is running on openSUSE 10.3).
Therefore I suspect the 3c574_cs driver module to be the reason for the lockups
(or some weired combination of the vlan implementation and the 3c574_cs
module). Now that my VDSL2 modem is connected to the e100 network device via
vlan, I don't experience any kernel lockups anymore (at least not so far).
