I seem to be suffering from this bug too.

In using a canon n670u which starts scanning ok but after about 3cm starts
making a horrible noise at which point I pull out the USB cable. The symptoms
are exactly like people describe here:

It is not mechanical. If I reboot to windows it works to perfection. Nor did I
have problems with suse 10.0 

If you would like any specific details of my setup please let me know (you may
have to explain to me how to give them).
