OK, it took some time to gather the information:
* As far as I can tell everything worked totally fine until 10.3. Every kernel
of 10.2 worked fine in every aspect.
* The kernel options don't help on the latest official kernel
2.6.22.16-0.2-default: both soundsystem and USB remain dead after otherwise
sucessful suspend2disk.
* Latest factory kernel 2.6.24-2-default boots with breakpoints in between has
other faults so that we have not investigated any further.
Conclusion: this issue is not fixable or won't find a fix? I repeat: something
definitely changed between 10.2 and 10.3 so that now it does no longer work.
And vanilla kernels lack pre-compiled wireless drivers so that they are not
usable for the regular user :(
