Well, as workaround you can boot the installation CD and choose "start
installed system" which uses the kernel from the CD and the userland from your
disk. After the installation has finished, you can run mkinitrd manually.

In the installation system, the kernel postscript doesn't run the mkinitrd.
That's the task of the yast bootloader. Reassigning to the yast bootloader
maintainer.
