Guys, Marcus
A little more information. On another box with a promise chipset for the
sata raid controller with software raid, I was able to manually install the new
kernel and the resulting grub/menu.lst worked fine.
The box on which the kernel install crashed has an nvidia chip for the sata
raid. That may be the problem. The system is:

Raid: 2 Seagate (ST3250410AS_6RY28WW1) SATA 250G drives in Raid 1

Let me know what else you need. I would like to help solve this one so I
can keep the production box updated. Thanks for all your effort.
