some more observations:
Today, it did not hang. I had booted at home (WLAN interface "air", ipw2200
driver), started openvpn, had it running for two days, stopped openvpn this
morning. "stopping openvpn... failed". However, surprise - no "waiting for
interface...". Then i did "rmmod ipw2200" to conserve power, which first seemed
to hang. Looking in syslog showed me "waiting for interface air to become
free". When i just wanted to fire up syrq-t and then reboot, i found that it
eventually succeeded. So it might be some race condition hiding somewhere which
just gets exposed much more often recently?
