Actually this is caused by /usr/lib/gnome-panel/libclock-applet.so, as the
error message implies. Renaming it to
/usr/lib/gnome-panel/libclock-applet.so.bak causes gnome-panel to remove the
clock applet from the task bar and start properly.

So we are left with two issues here:

1. a broken libclock-applet.
2. an unforgiving gnome-panel, that can't handle ill behaved applets.

I am curious why nobody else reports this, am I the only one to use GNOME these
days ? Or is everybody getting along well without a task bar ?

As far as yast2 sw_single is concerned, libclock-applet.so is part of the
gnome-panel-2.21.5-2 package.
