just set mount options to read-only in /etc/fstab

That's not a solution for me. I mount it by hand, on the command line, only
when needed. And I don't want to remember to use -o ro every time. I want the
default to work, without hanging my system.

ok - maybe it`s not optimal to have r/w mount by default, so novell
should really consider changing this. i recommend this and i assume
this is what you like to see !?

NO!

r/w mount has been default for so long, it would be insane to change that.

Change your kernel config to omit the NTFS kernel module, so users cannot use
it. From now on, tell them to use nfts-3g.
