What does exactly NetworkManager shows? Does it show the wireless card but no
wireless networks or no wireless card at all?

Please attach the NetworkManager log, /var/log/NetworkManager.

(For using WPA from the command line you need wpa_supplicant. This is how
NetworkManager operates the card, btw.)
