Thanks Tejun for shedding some light on the issue. The fake RAIDs story is
interesting and enlightening. Recently I had a chance to discuss the hw vs. sw
RAID issue with Neil Brown and his arguments seemed plausible to me. I used to
be in favor of hw RAID, mainly to offload the RAID management task from the
main CPU. Modern CPUs are however powerful enough to make this extra work not
noticeable. And with RAID 0 or 1 levels with only two disks, the RAID
management is not very CPU intensive.
Furthermore, as Tejun also pointed out, choosing hw RAID makes your data
dependent on the particular RAID hardware. If this hardware goes south, in most
cases your data follows. In particular if that hardware is old enough and
replacement not available. The software RAID guarantees that your data is going
to survive hardware failures: if your disk controller dies, you just put in a
new one (or a new motherboard) and the RAID format is going to be recognized by
the Linux kernel.
It definitely makes sense to choose software RAID even when your hardware
offers RAID capability.
