The raid card you have is a PCI card supported by a driver in the Linux kernel.
RAID or single disks, as seems to be this case, are available through the
driver (it should be sata_promise). The Linux software RAID is a different
thing. You have three options:
- hardware RAID
This should be created either in BIOS or using an external utility. Then the
RAID is used directly through the promise sata driver. I suppose that there
could be one or more RAID arrays created.
- single disks
No RAID arrays created. Still, the single disks are available through the
promise sata driver.
- software RAID
Two disks combined into one or more software RAID arrays. Note that this is
different from the hardware RAID. The RAID functionality is implemented on
another level, i.e. in the Linux kernel.
Which option you use depends on your needs. Please refer to one of many RAID
documents on Internet.
Your problems might be related to initrd not containing all the necessary
modules. Can you show /etc/sysconfig/kernel?
hwinfo output as well as any logs would be helpful as well.
