After running Pidgin for a while (days) with sound events turned on, it becomes
increasingly slow. The slowness seems to be related to excessive CPU usage
whenever it needs to do anything, like repainting or processing keyboard or
network events. When you type, it can take as much as a second from keypress to
feedback.

This only happens when sound events are turned on.

I have a profile that can be viewed in sysprof, which seems to indicate that
it's spending a lot of time in gstreamer code.
