Likely a driver bug.
Just try to replug the external jack without reboot. Is the sound recovered?
If not, try to get /proc/asound/card0/codec#* file for both working and
non-working states, and attach them (instead of pasting to the form). Also,
get "alsactl -f somefile store" files for both working and non-working states,
too. They will be a great help for checking what's wrong.
