--- Comment #1 from Robert Davies 2007-11-15 15:15:39 MST ---
A Debian r4.0r1 Etch net install succeeded, it was possible to access the
HPT366 IBM DPTA disk as md9 & md12 during the install. So Debian kernel
2.6.18-5 seems allright, and it boots with all 4 IDE devices present.
A more recent Debian 2.6.23 kernel from Sidux Live CD fails, so problem would
appear to be introduced after 2.6.19 and is not just a SuSE issue.
Ubuntu wouldn't install with HPT366 active and I had to simplify the box down,
but once installed does successfully run their 2.6.22-14 even with ACPI
enabled, powering off the box for instance.
Sidux eros_pre2 live KDE Lite CD with 2.6.23.1-slh-smp-22 kernel, similar
problem with last message about ACPI "ACPI: Expecting a [Reference] package
element, found type DFFA21D0"; IDE activity light lit with frozen machine
unrepsonsive to keyboard.
Failsafe mode boot from CD appears to enable lots of diagnostics, initially
loading via Grub abnormally slowly (noacpi noapic nomce nosmp nousb noz=off
nohwsetup nocpufreq xmodule=vesa). It loads pata_hpt366 and (slowly) continues
to probe other drives and then gets stuck on the 2nd IBM DPTA disk, once it's
printed stuff about the DVD/CDRW and then moaned about the drive being on 40
wire cable (which is untrue).
Onboard IDE
1 Master - IBM DPTA 20 GB disk
2 Master - Ricoh DVD/CDRW
HPT 366
1 Master - Seagate 10GB disk
2 Master - IBM DPTA 20GB disk
There's also an Nvidia Riva TNT2 graphics card, and an ISA 3 Com Etherlink III
combo network card (3c509), but no sound now.
Powering off the IBM disk, disabling BIOS ACPI, seems to move the problem to
the Seagate, boot CD whirs, then times out, IDE activity light on, same
symptoms. The GRUB was slow, but once kernel loaded, operation was normal
speed then it got stuck on the Seagate.
Disabling ACPI in BIOS and booting without HPT 366 disks causes long delay for
ACPI tables, then normal load.
Perhaps there's a fix in Ubuntu's kernel patches, or their kernel has not
applied a patch which causes the problem. Hope this helps.
