I have attached the output in the file dmesg. I also then plugged in the usb hd and rebooted. The OS then recognized the device and automounted it. I have attached two additional files; the dmesg-reboot is from when I rebooted it with the usb device installed. The other is dmesg-reboot-usb, that is the same file parsed for just the usb devices. If it helps I noticed that when I first plugged in the device, the power light came on for just one second and then went off. When I rebooted, the light came on and stayed on; so it may have something to do with power or power daemon.
