I'm having problems with my wireless on a Dell D830 that I think are related to
this.

It could be related to https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=303834, or
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=308895

The strange thing is, sometimes it works fine, other times it doesn't connect
to the wireless at all and I've not found a pattern yet.
If it doesn't connect, iwconfig still thinks it's bound to a access point, and
if I manually assign an IP address, then it works.

In the log I get

"Error getting killswitch power:
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.KillSwitch.NotSupported - Access type not supported"
repeated over and over again.

I tried the suggestion in comment 8
(https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=303834#c8) basically disabling
wireless with hardware, then trying to connect and re-enabling in hardware and
wireless is now working again now.

very strange.
