you can't add one but the patch will replace all occurrences of xfree86
in XkbVariant with basic which is ok according to your comments

with my question I want to know if this first step has worked. if yes
I would have checked why it doesn't work by courtesy of the GUI

so would you mind to call

   sax2 -r -a

and tell me if you see

   XkbVariant "basic"

yes or no
