What happens if you stop HAL (rchal stop), insert the USB-disk or iPod.

Nothing.My external hdd wasn't mounted.

Is the df call blocked?

I wouldn't say.It didn't seem blocked.I'm not exactly sure, what you mean
"blocked".Frozen?

What happen if you mount the device now by hand and call then df? Blocked?

I had to wait for a while (aprox.30 sec) on output.

Is there anythink in /var/log/messages after attach the disk?
