Following change will be done in the next upstream release of smartmontools:

Bruce, Stanislav,
another approach would be to skip the self test start during first pass
(unless -q onecheck is set). This would result in a startupdelay equal
to --interval setting. No extra option needed. Simple to implement by
passing the "firstpass" flag down to ATA/SCSICheckDevice. Simple to
document by one sentence ;-)
