I am experiencing the same problems on a Dell Inspiron 6000 which uses the
ipw3945 driver.
Performing a 'su - root && service network restart' works some of the time.
Otherwise, a reboot is required to get it working.
Then after the network comes up, the /var/log/NetworkManager still continues to
output errors about the killswitch.
