- switch to text console, log in as root
- run 'rckdm stop'
- in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager, change DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" to say "xdm"
instead
- run 'rcxdm start'
- does the problem exist there too? if not, try also rebooting
