Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I am still seeing this with 10.3 GM
("Found In" field update). I did some debugging by observing the value of
/var/run/gdm.pid before running init 3, and including a -x option in the #!
line of the xdm init script. What happens is that the killproc succesfully
kills the pid in gdm.pid; however something immediately respawns gdm with a
slightly higher pid. I am not sure where this comes from. The parent of the
new gdm is init (pid 1). At this point, /var/run/gdm.pid does not exist at
all, so if I then run rcxdm stop manually, it doesn't shut down the new gdm.
