Summary: [suspend] Machine hangs in ksoftirqd/1 and events/1
after resume
Product: openSUSE 10.3
Version: Final
Platform: i686
OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: digulla@xxxxxxxx

Log file for a "successful" suspend (case #2)
After updating to 10.3 from 10.2, suspend to disk stopped working. There are
two effects:
1. I get the green "suspend" screen which goes black after a few moments,
leaving only a green bar at the bottom which slowly fills from the right. After
a few moments, the machine freezes. When I reboot, it comes up normally (ie. no
resume information was found, so the freeze didn't terminate orderly).
2. When it comes up again, 9999% of one P4 core (hyperthreading) is
alternatively used by events/1 or ksoftirqd/1. This looks as if the machine
remembers all the IRQs it has missed and tries to catch up (which isn't
possible, I manually cut the power after the suspend).
When I get this far, I can still run processes as root from the console
(Alt-F1) and from an existing root konsole in KDE. As a normal user, I can't
start new processes. I can type them in, I can switch virtual desktops but the
system won't go though exec() (I can type in a command but ps -ef as root won't
show it).
I can't kill processes (neither as user nor as root, not with "kill" nor with
"kill -9"). It is as if the machine has locked up for any new processes but
will still run the old ones.
I've checked the pm-suspend.log but couldn't see anything unusual in it (no
errors or the like). If the resume is successful, the last line is: "done
running thaw hooks".
