I ran the online update, to upgrade from OpenSUSE 10.2 (64-bit) to 10.3 on my
Compaq nx7400 laptop, using the small CD ISO image (64-bit). I ended up with an
unbootable system.

The first problem was that the CD installer couldn't start in graphical mode,
so I was forced back into the curses-based installer, and I had to download an
installer system. After that, the install went quite smoothly, although I had
to resolve some package issues (can't remember exactly which).

The main problem arose when the first part of the install process was finished
and the installer had rebooted the system. Then the boot loader on the hard
disk would not start: there were some garbage characters printed to the
console, and if I pressed enter I could see a quick glimpse of a message,
something like "No operating system".

I then downloaded the complete 10.3 DVD (64-bit) and ran the update once again.
And I got the same problem after rebooting.

I finally installed 10.3 on top of the old installation, without repartioning,
and that made the system bootable again. Of course, I had to recreate my users
and some other configurations, but now it seems that the system is working OK
again.
