Summary: "request_module: runaway loop" after kernel update to
2.6.22.9-0.4
Product: openSUSE 10.3
Version: Final
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3
Status: NEW
Severity: Major
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Kernel
AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReportedBy: vonRadziewski@xxxxxx
QAContact: qa@xxxxxxx
Found By: ---
The problem occurred after a kernel upgrade using the opensuse-updater on my
openSUSE 10.3 64 bit system (Lenovo ThinkPad Z61m) with default kernel
2.6.22.5-31 to 2.6.22.9-0.4. Upon reboot, the system failed to continue
booting: Right after the message
"Freeing unused Kernel memory: 232k freed"
the error
"request_module: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c"
was displayed several times followed only by the system recognizing the
touchpad and the trackpoint. The system was responsive to Ctrl-Alt-Del and shut
down correctly. Unplugging of USB devices did not result in restoring the
booting capabilities.
The kernel patch had to be undone using the 10.3 installation CD and a backup
of the kernel directories. BTW, the /usr/src/linux-2.6.22.5-31 directory had
been deleted by the update.
Unfortunately, none of the logs from /var/log/ contain the error message
described (assumably to early in the booting process).
