[Bug 333031] Cannot activate subpixel hinting in KDE

I just installed the latest ATI proprietary driver (fglrx
8.41.7_2.6.22.5_30-1.1) from the ATI online repository offered in openSUSE
10.3. Fonts look crisper now, but they are also smaller, so that may just be a
different DPI resolution. The sub-pixel hinting checkbox is still disabled, and
sax2 tells me that 3D is not supported.
I have no clue if either is right, i.e. whether the fglrx on X600 supports
sub-pixel hinting or 3D.
This may be a bit off-topic, but what driver would be recommended for the
Radeon X600 cards, so one can enjoy both sub-pixel hinting and 3D?
