https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=331939#c249380 Summary: [Installation] [YaST-partitioner] Replace current 'Upgrade'-installation option; modify partitioner- suggestions for 'Install'-option Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: christian.jaeger@rub.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- This feature-request originates from several bug-reports from several users who've complained that the YaST-Partitioner will suggest to delete an existing /home-Partition on install. See Bug #249380. The discussion has come down to the point that the maintainer insistss 'Install'-option was never meant to preserve any data existing on /home and that one should really use the 'Upgrade'-option for that. Most contributors to the discussion ask that the user should at least be warned and given the option to preserve his /home and create a mountpoint for it, I agree with that. I also strongly believe that the current 'Upgrade'-option of openSUSE is not functional and has lead to users rather preferring the 'Install'-option, even if they want a system-upgrade (even Federio seems to). For openSUSE 10.3, too, there have been several reports, in blogs and such, about serious dependency-resolution-problems with 10.2 --> 10.3 upgrades. For example this one: http://education.zdnet.com/?p=1255 These sorts of reports are really meant to scare people away from openSUSE. As a solution to this problem, I ask to abolish the current 'upgrade'-option and replace it with an option for a clean install that only leaves the 'home'-partition intact. Additionally, users should be warned if they have an existing home and choose an install, like described above.
