Hello,
Opensuse 10.2 no longer has the problem (I activated suspend to RAM support in
the BIOS); two days ago I upgraded to opensuse 10.3. I'm afraid the problem has
returned, only now it's worse. Shutting down causes a disk to spin down, up and
down again with the difference that shutting down doesn't flush the disk cache
(no message appears right before the shutdown about flushing), which results in
a not clean filesystem when booting. The controller is a promise PCD20376, has
3 disks connected to it and I suspect that the only disk that does the spin
down-up-down sequence is the one connected to the PATA port, although I am not
certain at the moment.
