For me it works fine:

(**) intel(0): Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"
[...]
(II) intel(0): Output VGA using initial mode 1280x1024

Without this option I'm getting:

[...]
(II) intel(0): Output VGA using initial mode 1152x768

I don't have an explanation why the option fails for you. :-(
