yast2 kiwi is doing some pretty strange things. I think it's going on towards 2
hours of it running, whereas if I use the command line it takes less than
half-an-hour or so.

Now it's piping out hundreds and hundreds of lines, slowly, of (see
attachment). Did you end up trying that config.xml (link above, from the other
bug report)?
