the sync information is detected by asking the monitor. Could you
send the information from
hwinfo --monitor
Additionally if you select 1280x1024@60Hz sax includes:
Option "VertRefresh" "30-60"
by default the driver should chose the best refresh value and
I don't know why the result would be different if you set a
fixed value compared to a range with the same end value
