Thanks for the driver info. I'll give them a go as soon as rc1 is installed

to reboot to restore it again."
That makes the point I was trying to explain above: if I reboot as a livecd, I
cannot effect any kernel parameters (even using the Fn keys), it still boots to
the preset ATI radeon driver -- like using F-3 and selecting VESA -- It still
boots to the same garbled display screen.
The only way that I have any control is as I outlined in the OP as I can't make
it even boot to a CLI.
