The idea of that pattern dialog is to give less experienced users a simpler
approach to package selection. WITHOUT all those bells and whistles that
experts want, but that OTOH frighten novice users so much that they can't use
it for fear they might break everything.
Adding the "check dependencies" button there and a "Auto check" checkbox would
defeat this purpose. And both of those widgets might disappear even in the
detailed package selection anyway due to other problems (container resolvable
status not propagated to packages without solver run).
So, the part about not solving in the pattern selector is clearly INVALID. So
is the idea to add those widgets that make the detailed package selector so
complex.
Another issue is if it makes any sense to even show the pattern selector (the
simple one) in the update case. IMHO it does not. During installation, solving
should not take so long that it turns into a major problem. And our pre-made
patterns should not cause dependency problems, either.
So: I propose to not show the pattern selector during update (which was the
scenario that gave reason to write this bug report according to an IRC
conversation).
