It was probably either faulty cable or slightly-out-of-spec ODD which degraded
signal quality a bit too much. As for the partition read error, it's an
interaction between error handling parameters in libata and failure handling in
block layer. Although IDE behaved better in this specific case, backing down
to PIO at the first error is a terrible idea especially for modern SATA
hardware which runs the cable at several gigahertz with very low swing voltage.
That said, libata EH parameters can surely be improved to handle cases like
yours better. I'll work on that. Thanks.
