While downloading pattern files from the online repositories as part of the
installation process, there is a progress bar displayed for each downloaded
file. The problem is that there are many such files, and they are typically
very small, so the progress bar is simply jumping from 0% to 100% and back all
the time. This is not very useful progress information IMHO.

Much more useful would be a single progress bar for the whole set of files to
be downloaded (or maybe one progress bar per repository, whatever is easier.)
That way the user would really how much work is left to be done.
