Comment 2 fixed by now (zypper 0.8.18).
As for the enhancement request, we are currently in the situation of having too
large logs. Replacing a simple number by any string (for the log levels) would
increase the size of the log files even more (e.g. 2xnumber_of_log_lines bytes
if tree-letter strings like ERR were used). I'm afraid we can't afford that.
Closing as WONTFIX.
