My mimeinfo.cache is: image/tiff=gimp.desktop;evince.desktop;f-spot-view.desktop;eog.desktop; Different order may be caused by different order of inodes. For me, gimp is the default for all images, even if defaults.list defines eog. I guess that it is f-spot on your installation. /etc/gnome_defaults.conf is not used by GNOME directly, only by SuSEconfig.gnome-vfs2. defaults.list defines correct application and seems to be completely ignored. Either it is a bug or upstream changed way to define default application.
