Bryce, install works with packages by default, update works with patches by
default. If you've got the 'already installed' message, it means no newer
version is available.
There may be patches available, though. Use zypper install -t patch xpdf to
install the patch. Also, to update all packages with newer package versions the
update command, use zypper update -t package, otherwise it will update the
packages with patches, not newer packages.
The main reason for this is security. Many users of openSUSE use factory. Using
zypper update -t package updates LOTS of packages, and as the factory is a
development repository, that may likely need to a corrupt system. Thus it is
desirable that only those who know what they do, do the zypper update -t
package. Apllying patches (the default) does not harm. After all, factory does
not contain any AFAIK.
