Well, the cdrom constantly caused timeouts and the harddrive is on the same
channel.  ATAPI timeout is 30s and if you add recovery time to that it's
somewhere around 35 to 40 secs.  During that time, both the harddrive and cdrom
aren't responsive - commands just get stuck, so it could be that the excessive
delays are triggering timeout mechanism somewhere in the userland.  Does it
sound plausible?

Benjamin, can you give a shot at network install with the cdrom detached from
the system so that we can debug what's going on with the cdrom?
