Hi Mark,
I write again. The reporter of the bug submitted a patch which improves
the behaviour of -r parameter. I enclose the patch for less-406.
Information from the author of the patch are at

What do you think about the patch? Could you put it to the next release
of less?
Thank you for your answer

Hi Ales,
I will evaluate this patch and decide if it should be added to less.
However, I should say that I'm leery about doing this, since the main
point of using -r is when the file contains nonprintable characters
which produce unknown results when sent to the screen. The proposed
patch may improve the display in some situations, but will make it worse
in others. For example, if a file contains only short lines, but each
line contains nonprintable characters that move around within the line,
or change the attributes of characters in the line, then the patch may
cause these lines to be incorrectly split. The current code works
correctly in this case.
I wonder why the reporter is using -r at all. The sample file that he
sent did not contain any nonprintable characters. The -r flag is
intended for very specific circumstances, not for general use.
