gphoto was not installed. after installing it, the output :
Model Port
----------------------------------------------------------
Mass Storage Camera disk:/media/disk
Olympus C-370Z usb:
output of lsusb :
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 07b4:0109 Olympus Optical Co., Ltd
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
there are no additional messages in dmesg at that time.
actually, it turns out, there are two popup windows : one titled "usb mass
storage interface" and other - "2.1g removable media".
usb mass storage interface opens system:/media/camera;
2.1g removable media opens system:/media/sdb1
opening system:/media/camera kills the usb device, opening system:/media/sdb1
works just fine.
the mountpoint stays the same as in the troublesome case.
