all drivers you mentioned here already have a driver profile for "special"
handling. Instead of a checkbox I would suggest to enable Composite by
default if supported in a global way.

Otherwise I would suggest to have the extension enabled when needed which
means as soon as a Composite aware Windowmanager is used and/or Xgl was
activated.

Stefan what is your opinion on Composite ?
