There was a kermel installed, and with considerable meddling by hand on
a virtual console I was eventually able to install a bootstrap.  I suspect
that part of the problem was that the disk partition names were extremely
long device id numbers which yast may not have been recognising.

I was recently able to install alpha5 on the same machine without difficulty.
The machine is in another city, and I am not sure when I will be able to try
alpha 6.
