I will add a more verbose error message that is shown when that error occurs.
Is the following message good enough?

Unable to check for patches and updates because
/usr/sbin/zypp-checkpatches-wrapper helper programm is not set SUID root.

This problem might be solved by setting File Permissons in YaST Local Security
tab to Easy.

How can I find out whether the program has been started by autostart?
